Software Engineer

Francisco J. Ruiz Villar

I work on data-processing applications, backend services and production infrastructure, mainly in satellite ground-segment environments. My background combines software development with the operation and maintenance of the systems I build.

About

I have more than ten years of professional experience in software engineering, data processing and production operations. I currently work as a Data Processing Engineer in the EUMETSAT environment, supporting processing applications used by operational, scientific and flight-dynamics teams.

Before that, I worked on the Galileo Reference Centre, first in software and operations engineering and later as deputy operations manager. Earlier in my career I developed ground-segment software at GMV.

Most of my work is in Python and Linux, with PostgreSQL databases, containerised services, CI/CD and monitoring. I tend to work across the full lifecycle: implementation, deployment, troubleshooting, maintenance and improvement of production systems.

Experience

Current

Data Processing Engineer

EUMETSAT environment

Develop and operate data-processing applications across multiple satellite missions. The work includes Python services, processing pipelines, PostgreSQL and Oracle, CI/CD, observability, storage management and investigation of production issues.

Previous

Software / Operations Engineer · Deputy Operations Manager

Galileo Reference Centre

Developed operational software and supported the operation of Galileo reference systems. Later acted as deputy operations manager for a five-person team, covering deployments, incidents, operational procedures, reporting and service improvements.

Earlier

Software Engineer

GMV

Developed ground-segment software, including a production client/server service for discovering and transferring new filesystem data between constrained environments, with persistence, retry and fallback behaviour.

Selected engineering work

Mission data processing

Development and production support of processing applications for multiple missions, including ingestion and processing workflows, database-backed services, orchestration, operational tooling and interfaces used by downstream systems.

PostgreSQL operations

Investigation of storage growth and database behaviour in large production deployments. Work has included retention changes, table maintenance, recovery, schema and storage analysis, and changes intended to reduce operational risk and manual intervention.

Software delivery

Build and maintenance of GitLab CI/CD workflows for Python and containerised services, covering tests, static analysis, packaging, container images, releases and deployment tooling.

Observability & incidents

Production troubleshooting using application logs, system metrics and database diagnostics. Monitoring work includes Prometheus, Grafana and Loki, together with service-level investigation on Linux hosts and containers.

Operational software

Development of tools used by operations teams, including data transfer, reporting, filesystem and storage workflows, automation and failure-recovery mechanisms.

Technical background

Languages and application development: Python, Bash, Django, SQL.

Data and databases: PostgreSQL, Oracle, Polars, data-processing pipelines and workflow orchestration.

Systems and delivery: Linux, Docker, Docker Compose, GitLab CI/CD, nginx, gunicorn.

Observability: Prometheus, Grafana, Loki and production diagnostics across applications, databases and operating systems.
